Impact of COVID-19 on Biomedical Research Funding: Pandemic Response and Some Lessons Learned
Thursday, April 15, 2021, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT
Category: Webinars

COVID-19 created an unprecedented impact on biomedical research world. Federal stimulus packages were released and major research funding were redirected to support COVID-19 relevant research, such as to study the biology and pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2, understanding the disease course and epidemiology, and developing methods/technology for its detection and treatment. Almost all major Federal, State and private sponsoring agencies re-strategized their funding resources to respond to the pandemic by addressing the urgent scientific questions. This session will track the pandemic responses by some of the major funding agencies in US and will summarize the different phases of COVID research funding planned/released from the beginning until now. It will also give an overview of the hurdles the scientific community has been facing - especially the Early Stage Investigators, and some strategies RD professionals can implement to address the urgent need for facilitating COVID-relevant research funding and grant development. The overall goal is to summarize and discuss the lessons we’ve learned so far, and to reflect on the funding trend for the biomedical/healthcare research.

Learning Objectives (Presentation Followed by Discussion/Q&A Session):

  • Strategized COVID-19 research funding - during different phases of the pandemic
  • Pandemic response – RD role in facilitating COVID-relevant research funding and grant development
  • Impact of COVID-19 on Early Career Investigators – both physician and non-physician scientists
  • COVID-19 and future funding for biomedical research – reflection on the funding trend

The speaker for this session will be Anindita Mukherjee, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
